When you’re having a great hair day you feel polished and well put together. However, when visible regrowth or greys appear between salon visits, editor Trudi Brewer shares her quick beauty solution to get your locks looking great again.
When it comes to my colour, there is no better result than a salon-finish. However, if you're like me and always try and book in at the last minute, or you're forever changing appointments due to a busy work schedule - then learning to touch up your regrowth at home is a life saver. When I am caught short and need to look my best between salon visits, MYHD comes to the rescue. MYHD or My hairdresser, is a salon quality colour, created by Sydney-based hairdressers, for women who want to touch up their regrowth at home. For me it will never be a replacement for the amazing salon finish my colourist creates when I visit d&m Hair Design, however when I need to blend the grey; it’s great to know how, without destroying the overall look of my salon-created colour.
If you’re confident to give home colouring a go, or want to blend grey using a less permanent option, here's my pick of products and a step-by-step guide.
Step one
The shade you choose makes or breaks this beauty duty. Always go one shade lighter than your natural hair colour when concealing grey regrowth. For example, I am the base shade of a 6 (dark blonde with some grey at the front), so I apply 7.1 (medium ash blonde).
The ash tone helps neutralise any warmth (red) that can leave the overall colour looking brassy as it grows out. Follow the instructions in the box when mixing the colour, it’s a bit like baking, use the correct measurements, and you will get a great result. Half a tube is plenty to cover regrowth around the hairline.
Step two
Start on clean, dry hair. Section off the bulk of the hair you are not re-touching and tie it back in a hair band. Push hair back from the face, and brush colour upward, only colouring the regrowth or visible grey, a little colour goes a long way so make sure your brush is not overloaded with product.
Step three
Take one centimetre wide sections to allow a full coverage of the colour. Use a colour brush (available at pharmacies) to flick the cream colour gently into the regrowth in order to blend your existing colour and grey together. Only colour where the regrowth is visible. Allow 45 minutes for the colour to process, shampoo and condition hair, and then style.
My touch-up colour tips
1. Always follow the instructions inside the box, if you have a sensitive scalp patch test the colour on the skin at the back of your neck, wait for 24 hours, and then apply the colour.
2. Make sure you wear dark clothing in case colour drips, or cover your clothes with an old towel, and always wear the gloves provided, even when colouring blonde hair.
3. MYHD is a permanent colour. However, the result is supernatural and so nourishing on the hair. If you feel like the colour is too dark or want to remove the colour, try MYHD Colour Remover, which you can use up to a week after colouring your regrowth, and it will strip the colour from your roots in 30 minutes.
For instant cover to touch up grey roots, with no colouring required check out my favourite time saving powder, crayons and sprays. Simply brush, draw or spray on colour at the roots to conceal regrowth. These products will stay put until the next shampoo.
