When hair is healthy, it's shiny. We asked Oribe ambassador Danny Pato how to give our locks some instant gloss this winter.
Stylist Danny Pato from d&m hair design spends his days creating seamless colour and clever cuts. However, more and more women are searching for prescription based hair care to offer moisture and shine. Pato shares his tips and how to find the best haircare.
How do you get hair that is damaged to look shiny?
There are so many things you can do – the fastest way to heal damage starts with choosing the right products. Here's my list:
Use regular weekly treatment masks such as Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque, $98 and Olaplex No.3, $49.
Use a leave-in hair moisturiser such as Davines MOMO Hair Potion, $40 and apply to wet hair.
Get regular trims to remove the most damaged ends of your hair and invest in a professional shine treatment in salon.
Don't over shampoo your hair, give the natural oils a chance to distribute throughout the hair, if you need to use a dry shampoo between washes opt for a low-powder option such as Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo, $72.
Ease back on using heated styling tools and when you do use them apply a heat protection spray first, such as Davines MELU Hair Shield, $40.
Finally, if your hair needs instant shine, finish with a shine-enhancing spray or oil such as Oribe Balm D'or, $72 or Davines Shimmering Mist, $40.
Can you wash hair in a certain way to encourage shine?
Yes. I have three golden rules: I use professional shampoo and conditioner prescribed for you by a stylist that suits your hair and scalp type. Try not to wash hair in hot water (which is more difficult in winter) as it blasts open the hair cuticle leaving it susceptible to damage. When you condition hair, finish with a cold water rinse (again, difficult in winter.) This seals the hair cuticle shut, locking in the conditioner and helping to add shine.
Do brushes help encourage shine?
An excellent boar bristle brush by Mason Pearson is the gold standard. Brush dry hair - this helps create shine by evenly distributing the natural oils from the scalp to the roots and down to the ends.
What are your golden rules when styling?
When using a hairdryer, always use the nozzle and make sure it’s pointed downward onto the hair, this helps prevent frizz. Also when using GHDs, make sure you use a thermal protection spray to protect hair from heat damage. And, finally embrace hair oils, they will instantly add shine.
Favourite shine-enhancing product?
Oribe Brilliance & Shine Shampoo and Conditioner, from $69. This combo is incredibly luxurious, it contains silk amino acids and hydrolysed pearl protein, and gives hair an amazing intense shine.
