As part of our beauty and wellbeing month we want to highlight fast and simple ways to help you look and feel your best every day.
Ever wondered what state your bone health is in? Trudi Brewer finds out how stay in top shape.
Because they are a body part, you can understand why most of us hope our bone health is in good order. According to pharmacist Lee Tan from Life Pharmacy, Dunedin, understanding how our bones age and keeping active are vital in keeping your bones feeling healthy and strong
Like skin, as we age the repair and renewal process can slow down which results in our bones becoming much less dense, thin and fragile. "When a person's bone density drops below a specific level they may be diagnosed with Osteoporosis. In New Zealand, around 50 percent of women over the age of 60 are affected by osteoporosis, and younger women are affected as well." Tan says if you have suffered a fracture from the result of a minor bump or fall it's worth getting a checkup. "Osteoporosis is genetic and can be hereditary, however, lifestyle, and certain cancer medications can also affect your bone health." Tan believes while there is no quick fix, reducing the effects and preventing Osteoporosis comes down to staying active. "Mid-level weight-bearing exercise such as jogging and walking where the impact results in your bones are strengthening is the best way to keep your bone health in check." Tan also sites calcium and vitamin D as ideal supplements to assist with bone health. "Calcium is found in dairy products, so make sure you get enough dairy in your diet or consider a supplement. She also adds a health expert at Life Pharmacy can assist in the prevention or management of Osteoporosis."
The team at BEQ are keen on supplements especially when our diet falls short after a busy week.
