You may remember this face from the famous Robin Thicke Blurred Lines music video - if not you will know her on social media. Model, actress and female rights activist, the brunette beauty Emily Ratajkowski has had a rough first week as brand ambassador for Kèrastase. Trudi Brewer shares her view on why beauty is only skin deep.
Naturally blessed with a mane of luscious hair, it's no wonder this British beauty was offered the title of muse for international hair care brand Kerastase. Although her first week has been rough.
With an Instagram following of 16.5 million, Emily Ratajkowski announced her new role for the luxe-y hair brand on social media this week stating, “I am excited and proud to be chosen as a Kérastase ambassador. “Hair is an essential part of how I express myself. I love that feeling of clean, textured, natural hair – it instantly makes me feel more confident. I consider my hair a reflection of my inner strength. It’s not an ornament but a way to convey and empower myself."
But the star is in hot water after that announcement and her voicing an opinion after the Kérastase campaign, posting on Instagram hair is a “fundamental part of femininity." I guess it is - if you have hair?
While there is no doubt she was chosen for her goddess-like looks, there is more to this 26-year old than just a pretty face and a luscious mane. She has been back peddling on her recent post following the Kèrastase launch event.
Born in Britain before moving to Southern California at the age of five, Ratajkowski studied Fine Arts at UCLA before leaving to concentrate on her career as a model, which seems to be going pretty well by all accounts. Captured on magazine covers all over the world, she says her passion outside of work is the arts, cinema, and books, and that she is a staunch advocate for female rights? However, the star has received some pretty negative feedback from her gram-fans claiming her post was offensive to people who suffer from hair loss. Kèrastase too came under fire this week from her followers for being insensitive to women who may be suffering hair loss due to other disorders or cancer treatment. Comments included: “Some people have hair pulling disorders, cancer, or other reasons why they can't/don't want to grow their hair." Another wrote, “Hair has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with beauty - beauty comes from within, strength and intelligence." Another follower added (and this was our pick of comments). “Please be considerate. Beauty is skin deep.”
We do sympathise with the star - a bad hair day can make you feel pretty blah. But these days we are all prickly about being judged on how we look?
We do have to give credit to Kèrastase who tried to smooth the water, retracted their claims that beauty was synonymous with femininity. They told journalist Olivia Petter from the Independent,“Of course beauty is not defined by your hair, beauty is something more spiritual, beauty is an attitude coming from inside each of us.”
A sentiment we agree with - in fact for the team at BeautyEQ we believe- beauty is whatever brings you joy!
Welcome to the world of being a beauty ambassador Emily!
What does beauty mean to you, we would love to hear your comments?
