How to wear matte lipstick

From liquid to a buttery creamy consistency, the new matte lipsticks on offer this season have the power to stay put, while keeping your lips feeling super hydrated. Editor Trudi Brewer shares the winter lipstick finish you need now.

\Matte Lipstick

A matte lipstick these days is not only comfortable, and long wearing, it’s easy to apply.
Here’s the latest we love.

Dolce & Gabbana Dolcissimo Liquid Lip Colour, $65.

First up, this is one lippy you want to show off when touching-up on the run. Inspired by the recent D&G ready-to-wear collections, the beautiful peony print, red and white packaging houses the most glorious, liquid matte lip colour. Thanks to the nourishing oil-formulation - it's bellissimo to wear, and the colour lasts almost all day. Pictured here Candy.

Apply matte lip lipstick in layers, particularly a liquid formulation. Two or three light layers over the top of your lip liner will create an intense, long-lasting finish.

NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment, $45.

This wearable bold nude lip colour requires no liner and dries in seconds to become smudge-resistant, long-lasting, and comfortable to wear. There are 24 shades, Pictured here my fave American Woman.

If you want to go liner-free, apply the colour straight from the bullet, blot and then correct the edge with a little concealer. It gives that runway-inspired lived-in look.

MAC Powder Kiss, $40.

Expect a soft-focus effect (seen on runways across the globe) with this moisturizing matte lipstick. It’s weightless, has a fantastic colour payoff, and the 16 shades last for hours on the lips. Pictured here a bold berry named P for Potent.

When wearing a bold lip colour, keep the rest of your make-up minimal. Opt for a lightweight foundation, (use concealer if you need to cover any imperfections rather than heavy foundation), a dusting or peach or pink blusher on the cheeks, with well-groomed brows and you are good-to-go.

Nude by Nature Creamy Matte Lipstick, $29.

Did you know you eat almost two kilos of lippy in your lifetime, so if that's of interest to you, this natural lipstick is one to buy. Super-smooth, it offers a soft-focus, long-wearing finish (great for anyone with fine lines around the lips). The six shades are intensely-pigmented and super nourishing thanks to vitamin E, Australian Kakadu plum, mango seed butter, and castor oil. Pictured here 05 Riberrry, there are 10 shades.

There is nothing worse than seeing that tell-tale look of lip liner left on the lips when your lipstick fades, especially if it’s not exactly the same colour as your lipstick. Try an invisible liner to keep you lippy looking on point, such as Marc Jacobs Beauty (P) Outliner Longwear Lip Liner Pencil, $41, or Covergirl Fairwell Feather Lipliner, $13. Both trace an invisible line around the lip border to stop lipstick feathering into fine lines.

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Mousse, $27.

The blend of fine mattifying powders wrap the lips in a velvet-inspired finish. The wand applicator helps with precision application, and the creamy, mousse-like colour dries in seconds and lasts for hours. There are eight shades from neutrals, corals and bold reds. Pictured here Desert Sand.
