2020 is the year to embrace a low-maintenance style the new ‘tweed colour’ technique and maybe a fringe? Editor Trudi Brewer gets style advice from NZ’s best hairdresser.
Acclaimed stylist Danny Pato from d&m hair design in Auckland shares the hair looks you’ll be seeing everywhere this in 2020. Find out what’s right for you.
What cuts are on-trend in 2020?
Bobs are still going strong, and the on-trend shape is a nod to the 90s look. Think razor-sharp below the chin and grazing the cheekbones, styled super sleek or with waves and texture. For short hair, the pixie cut is slightly longer, it needs to sit about ear length. It's such a versatile cut and can be styled so many different ways: sleek (think Charlize Theron), or tousled, and curled. Or my favourite finished look is worn slicked back, glossy, and glamorous sporting soft finger wave curl.

Fringe or no fringe?
The curtain fringe (long with a middle part hugging both sides of the face) is still a great look this year, but shorter fringes are emerging, sitting just above the eyebrows. However, if you're contemplating wearing a fringe, it depends on your face shape, and the texture of your hair, ask your stylist for advice.

What about hair colour, what shades are you most excited by this year?
So many! I'm excited to see a move away from the traditional balayage technique, for a new look dubbed the 'tweed hair colour technique.' That is where the colour is less visible and evenly distributed. This technique still offers a natural result with your base colour still visible, but the lightness in the finished look isn't such a contrast. To create this look your stylist needs to take smaller sections to expose more of the natural undertones in your hair. As far as global colour goes (a seamless all-over colour), blonde is strong for autumn, from icy to strawberry or honey-toned. However, your hair needs to be healthy. I'm also excited about velvety coppers and reds for 2020, rich and intense with a cool or a warm undertone. For brunettes, multi-dimensional chocolate tones are definitely on-trend, where instead of having one colour all over, we can create subtle differences to add texture, so your hair colour catches the light. Finally, if you're feeling bold, high contrast colours are a great way to make a statement, thanks in part to Billie Eilish, (whose hair I styled a couple of years ago).

What about hot tools, what should we be investing in?
A professional hairdryer is the most essential heated tool you could have at home. I've been trialling the new ghd helios professional hairdryer, which is fast and light, so far it has become my new go-to hot tool.
What about styling products what should we keep in the bathroom cabinet?
It's not a styling product as such, Davines has just reformulated its Naturaltech Nourishing system for blondes. It's incredible! It has a 'Biacidic Bond Complex' which is plant-based and helps to rebuild and protect hair at a molecular level, (deep inside each hair shaft). It's made with vegan keratin and amino acids and seals the hair cuticles, which helps heal and prevent split-ends. It leaves damaged hair feeling strong, and looking shiny - and those results last. My favourite product within the system is the Davines Nourishing Keratin Sealer; a leave-in spray, which makes the hair feel incredibly soft.
What's your best advice for keeping hair healthy?
Healthy hair begins within! If your hair and scalp are not in top condition, your style will never look its best. Make sure you're eating enough Omega 3s (fatty fish, avocado, linseeds), selenium (broccoli, eggs) and plenty of green vegetables.
