Before I share the virtues of the Dyson Airwrap, I own the Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer, and I love it. I'm pretty good at styling my unruly, curly hair (as an ex-hairdresser, and have a plethora of hot tools in my possession. When I was gifted the Airwrap, I thought, would I ever use another hot tool with lots of attachments? How wrong was I. This tool is the bomb, I asked Wellington-based Buoy Director of hair Michael Beel, who's a Dyson Ambassador to help out with some tips on driving and getting the best from my new Airwrap.

How does the Airwrap curl your hair?

First, this tool works on damp, not dry hair. "It helps make styling so easy thanks to the Coanda effect, which attracts, holds and wraps the hair on the brush or wand by itself,” says Beel. Who uses the Airwrap in his salon and gave me some pointers on how to use it. I worked out quite quickly; you need to take small sections and hold the Airwrap tool about 10cm away from the bottom of each section. Beels says the other bonus with using this hot tool is, "The air is at a lower temperature (The Airwrap operates at 150°C and no higher) than other hot tools. This preserves the health and integrity of your hair. Also, because it uses warm air, and not scorching temperatures, the cuticle of each strand isn't stressed or ruffled and your hair stays smooth and looks shiny." For me, the only tricky part is working out which way the tool wraps the hair. The barrels have arrows on them, which need to be facing away from you (when you look into the mirror). To make sure the curls are consistent, you need to switch the barrel for styling each side of your hair (it takes a second) to create symmetrical curls. If you are struggling with the angles and directions move the barrel up towards your head to encourage it to wrap each section of hair around it, you will get better with practice. "I love the 30ml barrel attachments for creating beach waves and glamorous-looking curls," says Beel.
One tip: I have thick unruly hair, so as I have got better using it, I move my hand holding the base at the Airwrap up and down to grab all those stray strands if it doesn't wrap the whole section at first. Another important point: Resist wrapping your hair around the barrel like you would a traditional tong - this is a hands-free styling tool, which makes it so easy to use once you get the hang of it.

How long does the curl last?

You must apply a styling balm (to damp hair) before you start curling your hair. This will help hold in the curls, and Beel suggests using the cold shot setting for about 10 seconds, there are only three buttons, Airflow control, temperature control and power on and off, a finally a button to control the cold shot. To make sure that curl stays, you need to set with hairspray in our humid, damp winter weather.
Now I do admit it's pricey, at $849 but it does offer three styling tools in one, once you crack the hands-free way of wrapping the curl you will feel liberated knowing you can style your hair, in the same way, your stylist would. It is the most significant hair innovation I think I've seen in my beauty career, for protecting the health of your hair, and eliminating frizz, while boosting shine - this hot hair tool is worth every cent of the $849.
