The biggest hair trend in 2020

According to editor Trudi Brewer, the big news for hair in 2020 is DIY texture. Instead of super-sleek, over-styled hair, natural movement, think tousled and relaxed, (and we're so happy to hear it), is the aim for your style. Here’s how to embrace what God gave you.

Editor Trudi Brewer shares her top natural texture tips on TV3’s The Cafe with host Melanie Holmer.

Best tips on how to encourage natural texture in your hair?

Not to be confused with frizz, natural texture is easy to achieve if you treat your hair from the show. Encouraging natural movement begins when the hair is wet. The secret to natural curl is not to touch it when it's wet; let it air dry or after shampooing your hair, squeeze hair dry with a microfiber towel – never brush it wet, or even a cotton T-shirt instead of a bath towel. To minimise tangles, frizz and breakage, go to bed with it wrapped in a towel to dry naturally. Finally, don’t over-wash your hair, you need the natural oils from your scalp to encourage natural movement, am to wash your hair every third day, especially if it’s dry, coloured or curly.

What's on-trend with cuts to support the natural movement?

Think, less about trends and more about having a cut that suits your hair's texture. First up, consider your hair type: For those with fine hair, avoid too much layering. Keep your cut blunt and short. Lobs and bobs are great for adding fullness to fine hair because they add movement and texture without too many layers. For those with thick hair, you can get away with tons of layering, as long layers help with weight removal, and help to debulk that density. Anyone with curly hair needs weight at the bottom of their hair, so the ends don't look wispy. You don't want your stylist to remove the bulk; if it's cut it too short, it can look like a wig. Also, try to avoid having a fringe; this will be lots of work.
