Your skin is a mirror of your general health and a reflection of how your gut is fairing.
— Clinicians naturopath Jane Cronin

If like us you spent Christmas and New Year on a steady diet of rich food, sugar, and plenty of wine, then chances are you might be experiencing issues with your gut and your skin. From bloating to breakouts, intolerances to certain foods such as dairy products, gluten or nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, chilli, capsicum) can lead to inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema or hives. Your skin is a mirror of your general health and a reflection of how your gut is fairing, says Clinicians naturopath Jane Cronin.
“Poor food choices are one reason that our digestive walls could be damaged, however other things like stress, coffee, alcohol, illness and medications can also affect the health of our digestive system.”
Cronin adds, “When the digestive walls are not in good shape this can affect the balance of bacteria that live on them and things get though into our bloodstream that normally should not, for example, food that has not been broken down properly. This can lead to the immune system overreacting and creating congestion in the body that eventually comes out via the skin.” To get your skin health back on track, start from the inside, this means looking at food choices that support our digestive health.

Quick tips to improve your inner health to get that outer glow.

  • Cut back on the junk or processed foods, and eat plenty of brightly coloured fresh fruits and vegetables.

  • Drink more water, make sure you have at least eight glasses a day.

  • Try a one-week elimination of a food group that you think you might not be working for you, and see if you start to feel better.

  • Boost your gut with probiotics to help balance the good bacteria by eating fermented foods such as cider, miso, kimchi and sauerkraut.
