Lashes are one accessory you can enhance thanks to extensions, mascara and serums. And now tears? Just because it’s gone viral doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. We get expert advice on this latest claim, by editor Trudi Brewer.
Does crying make your eyelashes longer? Let’s look at the science. Yes, crying has multiple benefits, including reducing pain and lubricating your eyes. Sadly, however, growing longer lashes isn’t one of them. “It is a myth that if you cry often, your eyelashes will grow longer,” says dermatologist Marina Peredo. “When you cry, you are usually stressed, and your body releases hormones like cortisol, but there’s no evidence to suggest that it will make your lashes grow longer.” The reason for the latest viral myth is when your lashes are wet; they look longer; Dr Peredo agrees. Suggesting that social media is not necessarily where you can get all your beauty intel. “So while crying may not cause your lashes to grow, it can make them appear healthier and more lustrous.”
Why Do Eyelashes Thin?
“Eyelashes are specialised hairs meant to protect our eyes,” says Dr Peredo. “The length, colour, density and growth cycle, which are similar to all body hair, is hormonally and genetically influenced.” Dr Peredo adds that hormonal shifts, like those that occur as we age and menopause, can cause eyelashes to shorten, which affects the growth cycle of the hair follicles. “Some medical conditions like thyroid disease can also make someone lose their eyelashes and eyebrows. Certain nutritional deficiencies like zinc, biotin and iron can also cause loss and thinning of lashes.”
How to Make Your Lashes Grow
There are some tried-and-true topical solutions to achieve longer, fuller lashes. “The only way we can modify lash quality and growth is by using topically applied ‘conditioners’ and medicines. These signal the hair follicle to stay longer in the growth phase, allowing it to thicken, darken and lengthen,” says Dr Peredo.
The lash serums we rate
Typically, lash serums contain ingredients that boost hair growth. These include vitamins like biotin, peptides, antioxidants, or prostaglandins. However, unlike a good mascara, the results take a few months to see, and how you use these serums matters. We apply lash serum along the lash line every morning, but always read instructions before use, as product instructions may differ. On average, it'll take anywhere from three weeks to two months for a lash growth serum to start working. Below are the lash serums that will deliver results.
RevitaLash Advanced Sensitive, $159. LiLash Eyelash Serum, $135. Olaplex LashBond Building Serum, $138. The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Lash And Brow Serum, $33.
