Running a business, launching a new brand, or taking a leap of faith to try something new is never easy. These three entrepreneurs have done just that and are bastions of their industries. Each shares the highs and lows, the admin they dread, and the wins that come with being the boss.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, Editor Trudi Brewer shares three incredible women in the spotlight for all the right reasons.
Natalie Bos, founder of Max and Louie
Image BeautyEQ
In an already cluttered colour market, the light bulb moment for Mount Maunganui-based makeup and brow artist Nat Bos has paid off. The creative mastermind behind Max and Louie, here she shares one of her proudest achievements, her top-selling product and the star that guides her every day.
What's your beauty background?
I’ve always had a passion for beauty, which blossomed into a career as a makeup artist in New Zealand and Melbourne during my twenties. I still embrace my artistry as a PMU (permanent makeup) artist and am the proud owner of Mount Brows, which has been thriving for nearly nine years. My journey in the beauty industry has been a fulfilling rollercoaster of creativity and self-expression.
What drives you? Why do you do what you do?
My biggest motivators are my family. They inspire me to pursue my dreams fearlessly, and I want to show them that hard work can lead to incredible achievements. I genuinely love empowering women to feel confident and express their unique beauty. There’s nothing like seeing someone light up when they feel good about themselves.
Why did you launch Max and Louie?
Beauty has been a lifelong love affair. About eight years ago, I had a lightbulb moment: “Why not create a makeup line?” I started with brow products to seamlessly integrate with my existing business, but my vision quickly expanded to encompass a full range of beauty essentials. It’s been an exciting adventure.
Where did the name come from?
It’s a heartfelt nod to my children, Max and Eloise. They are my world, and I wanted our brand to carry a piece of that joy and inspiration into the beauty community.
Max and Louie Blush Stick, in Sweet Peach, $39; there are eight shades. Max and Louie Lip Sleeping Mask, $36. Max and Louie Clean Skin Foundation, $72, has five shades. Max and Louie Sun Kissed Glow Drops, $34; there are three shades.
What's the top-selling product and why?
Our Max and Louie Hydra Shield Setting Spray with SPF is a star in our lineup. This fabulous multi-tasker is packed with clean, hydrating ingredients and serves three essential functions: prep, refresh, and set. It’s a game-changer for travel, giving your skin a moisture boost while shielding it from harmful sun exposure. Who doesn’t love a product that does it all?
What's your most proud and worst business experience?
I’m incredibly proud of launching Max and Louie in Life Pharmacy, Newmarket. It felt like a dream come true. Conversely, navigating quality control issues has been a tough lesson in resilience. Managing defective products is never easy, but it has taught me the importance of vigilance and continuous improvement.
How do you deal with fear and doubt?
I quickly shift my mindset when fear and self-doubt try to sneak in. I’ve learned that focusing on solutions rather than problems helps me move past any negativity. It's all about maintaining a positive outlook and reminding myself of my journey and that I’m always learning.
Who is your mentor?
My late mother is my guiding star. While she may not have labelled herself as a mentor, her values of hard work, kindness, and the importance of giving back have shaped who I am. I carry her lessons daily in my business and personal life.
What is the hardest part of being an entrepreneur? The toughest challenge?
Constantly think outside the box to create innovative products that stand out in a crowded market. It’s a thrilling puzzle but one that keeps me on my toes.
What new brand has caught your eye lately and why?
I’ve recently fallen in love with A’Prep Skincare. Their refreshingly clean and effective products are perfect for prepping the skin for flawless makeup. I’m all about having glowing skin.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their own business?
Start with manageable goals, and don’t let fear or self-doubt overshadow your vision. Break down your goals into bite-sized pieces, and tackle them individually. Every small win counts.
What keeps you awake at night?
I often lie awake, brainstorming exciting new products to add to our range. My mind races with ideas, and I can’t wait to bring them to life. Also, I have ideas for new campaign shoots and family balance.
What part of the role would you happily give up?
Without a doubt, I’d gladly hand over being in front of the camera. As someone from a family of introverts, I know it can be daunting. But I’m learning to embrace it as part of the job.
What will you never compromise on with your business?
I refuse to compromise on the quality and usability of our products. Many women, especially those over 30, lead busy lives and need beauty solutions that are simple and effective. I want our products to be a breeze while delivering fantastic results.
How do you stay looking and feeling your best?
I make it a non-negotiable to remove my makeup every night, no matter how tired I am. I aim for eight hours of sleep and prioritise hydrating ingredients in my skincare and beauty routines. It’s all about nurturing your skin.
What are your desert island beauty buys?
If I were stranded on a desert island, I would want A’Prep Camellia Glow Essence, A’Prep Cactus Serum, Shiseido Future Solution LX Eye Cream, Max and Louie Hydra Shield, and Max and Louie Lip Whip in Cotton Candy Cream. For my hair, I use Redken Acidic Bonding Hair Care treatments. These are my go-to products for keeping my skin and hair radiant and healthy.
Alena Hu, owner and brand director of Bare Jewellery
Image BeautyEQ
Alena Hu, founder of Bare Jewellery, never thought her affordable e-commerce jewellery brand would fly. It all started on Instagram during the COVID pandemic when her day job as a wedding photographer was put on hold. Fast-forward to today, and with four staff members, Alena has come a long way from working out of her one-bedroom studio with stock stashed under the bed.
Here’s her uplifting work story.
What's your career background?
My career journey began as a wedding photographer, a role I embraced for three years while pursuing a degree in graphic design at university.
What drives you? Why do you do what you do?
I created my personal dream job. It all started during COVID lockdowns when weddings were put on hold, and I needed a career change. I began asking myself: “What kind of company do I want to work for? What day-to-day experiences do I want to have? What opportunities do I wish were available, and could I create them myself?” Bare Jewellery was the answer to all of that. I feel fortunate to do what I love every day, and sometimes, I have to remind myself how lucky I am to grow a brand that doesn’t feel like work.
Why did you launch Bare Jewellery?
I launched Bare Jewellery because I saw a gap in the market for affordable yet beautifully designed Jewellery. It felt like there were only two extremes. Cheap, low-quality pieces or high-end, expensive jewellery with real diamonds and gold. I wanted to create something in between, a little treat to yourself with a reasonable price point, beautiful packaging, and elegant design. Bare Jewellery was my answer to that need, allowing me to combine my passions with a purpose.
Where did the name come from?
Honestly, I didn’t put too much thought into the name. Bare Jewellery started as a personal project, and I never imagined it would grow this big. At the time, I was trying to overcome imposter syndrome and didn’t want to overthink things that weren’t directly about the product. I didn’t have a big budget for branding, so I chose a chic and minimal name—literally, “Bare.” It just fit the vibe I wanted without complicating things.
What are the top-selling pieces in your collections?
Our top-selling pieces right now are bracelets and bangles. The Blanca Bangle, Phoebe Bangle, and Charlotte Bracelet are particularly popular.
Bare Jewellery Charlotte Bracelet, in gold or silver, $100. Bare Jewellery Blanca Bangle, in gold or silver, $90.
What's your most proud and worst business experience?
My proudest business experience has been building a young, dynamic team that complements each other’s skills and works well together. It’s been a new challenge for me, but seeing the team gel and execute our Black Friday sale so successfully last year was incredibly rewarding. We’re still on the journey of perfecting it, but I’m proud of myself for having the resilience to navigate this new territory. I wouldn’t call it the worst experience, but one of the most challenging aspects has been balancing my personal and work life. Right now, I work long hours seven days a week, and switching off mentally and physically can be challenging. I’m still figuring it out, but it’s one of the biggest struggles I’m facing now.
How do you deal with fear and doubt?
When I fear or doubt, I step back and re-evaluate why I’m doing what I’m doing. I reflect on my purpose and what I want in my life, both personally and professionally. I ask myself if the thing causing fear still serves my purpose or is just an obstacle. I also find it grounding to practice gratitude daily by identifying one thing I’m deeply grateful for. It helps me start the day with perspective and resilience before facing challenges.
Who is your mentor?
Many of my mentors are people I’ve never met but have learned from online. I’m a big fan of The Diary of a CEO podcast. I also find inspiration from the founder of I Love Ugly, whose podcast I used to listen to regularly. Grace Beverly, the founder of sportswear brand TALA, is another huge inspiration for me, as is fashion brand founder Amiee Smale from Odd Muse. I absolutely love her content.
What is the hardest part of being an entrepreneur?
Feeling alone and not always being understood. Because my job is so different from what my family and friends do, it can sometimes feel isolating. I know others are in the same boat; finding that sense of understanding can be challenging.
What new brand that has caught your eye lately and why?
I’m not always up-to-date with new brands, but I’ve always loved Jacquemus. Their visuals and marketing are consistently refreshing, and they’re true trendsetters in the industry. I admire how they push boundaries and keep their brand identity strong and unique.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Liner, shade 22, $34. Sun Bum SPF15 Tanning Oil, $21. Patrick Ta Blush Major Headlines Double-Take Creme & Powder Blush, in She’s the Moment,$70. Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF50+ Superscreen, from $24.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their own business?
Ensure your product fits the market by understanding your audience and their needs. Know your strengths and be honest about the areas where you need to learn or grow. Just launch it. Nothing has to be perfect from the start. Keep testing, learning, and adapting as you go.
What keeps you awake at night?
Honestly, they are either work-related thoughts or nothing at all. I’m usually so exhausted from the day that I pass out at night. I put so much energy into my work during the day that there’s not much left to keep me awake by nighttime.
What part of the role would you happily give up?
Having a team has taught me to let go of specific tasks, even though I still like to oversee all aspects of the business. I’ve already handed over order packing and customer service, but the one thing I’d be more than happy to give up entirely is the accounting.
What will you never compromise on with your business?
I will never compromise on the quality of our products and the visual experience we deliver. These are non-negotiables because they define Bare Jewellery’s brand identity and customer experience.
How do you stay looking and feeling your best?
Ensuring I take time for myself. It’s important for me to work out, spend quality time with people I care about, and not compromise my health. When I don’t prioritise myself, I start to feel resentful, even though my work brings me a lot of joy. So, I make it a point to go to that nail appointment, hit the gym, try some yummy food, walk my dog, and do things that keep me happy and balanced.
What are your desert island beauty buys?
If I were stranded on a desert island, my must-have beauty buys would be sunscreen Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF50, and if I wanted to get a bit of a tan, I’d go with Sun Bum SPF15 Tanning Oil. I also can’t live without my Patrick Ta Blush Major Headlines Double-Take Creme & Powder Blush —I’m obsessed with blush. And Anastasia Beverly Hills lip liners are a must since I top them up at least five times daily. That’s my Desert Island beauty kit.
Stylist and INCO Studio Owner Zoe Clark
Image BeautyEQ
A career hairdresser, Zoe Clark, founder of INCO Studio in Ponsonby, Auckland, knew manifesting a successful career in beauty was always in the cards. Ahead, Clark shares her non-negotiable business rules as a busy entrepreneur, her pro tips, and the essentials to keep hair shiny and healthy.
What's your beauty background?
I have been in the beauty industry for over 23 years—ekk. I started my career here in Auckland, enjoyed living and learning in London for five years, and became a L’Oreal artist upon my return. Managing salons from a young age, I always leaned towards leadership roles.
What's your constant juggle?
Time. Having three kids and a business, I always feel I could be better friends with time.
What drives you? Why do you do what you do?
I love what I do, and I always have. My passion drives me, and my biggest motivation is being the best I can be.
Why did you open Inco Studio?
I wanted to create a space where team members and guests feel valued and comfortable. Without these values, a functioning, relaxed business in the beauty industry cannot exist.
Shark Beauty ambassador Zoe Clark shares one of her favourite tools, Shark Beauty FlexStyle
Where did the name come from?
I brainstormed with my girlfriend, an incredible entrepreneur. I wanted guests to feel like they were in the best company like they would feel coming into your home. Relaxed, comfortable, warm, and inviting were the keywords. We arrived at INCO, which is a shortening of In Good Company.
What's your most proud and worst business experience?
I am most proud that our core values still run us. We have stayed authentic and continue to grow through challenging times. My worst is closing our doors on our first birthday for what was to be the first of many COVID lockdowns (while extending the studio into the back of the shop next door).
How do you deal with fear and doubt?
I am very realistic, but I love to dive in deep. I believe in hard work and determination; with these values, you can tackle most of your business challenges.
Who is your mentor?
I have a phenomenal group of ‘my people’ who are great sounding boards for my ideas. Nudging me forward to the left if needed so I can check in with them; I am fortunate they’re only a phone call away. Couldn’t pick just one of these amazing people to mention.
What is the hardest part of being an entrepreneur?
It’s the flip between my kids, my business, and the old friend time I don’t see much. My kids are conscious of how late I work when I travel for work and when I work weekends. Conversely, it also gives me as much as possible for my team and business.
What new brand that has caught your eye lately and why?
I love the new underwear brand Nala. I love its brand story, inclusivity, brave marketing, and what it stands for. It’s so cool.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their own business?
Keep going, keep working as hard as you can to make it as successful as possible. Make sure you have enough reserves for a rainy day or a global pandemic, and don’t give up if you genuinely believe in what you’re doing.
Perricone MD Cold Plasma + Lip Therapy, $60. Sunday Riley C.E.O Vitamin C Rich Hydration Cream, from $41. La Roche-Posay Ultra-Light Invisible Fluid Tinted, $38. Kerastase Chronologiste Masque Intense Regenerant, $120.
What keeps you awake at night?
The future of my business. We are nearing ten years old, and I’ve been thinking and planning what that will look like. Also, mum worries - always.
What part of the role would you happily give up?
Stock management. That is a lengthy administration.
What will you never compromise on with your business?
Our values, culture, service standards and being our authentic selves.
How do you stay looking and feeling your best?
I have an incredible Osteo who is now in our building, Bambino Osteo. Pilates keeps my body strong while being kind to my wrists, thanks to Core Collective, and I love to indulge in a relaxation massage and facial for some solid me time.
What are your desert island beauty buys?
A great lip balm. My go-to is Perricone MD cold plasma + lip therapy. My cleanser and moisturiser are Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser and Sunday Riley C.E.O Vitamin C Rich Hydration Cream. Sunscreen for the face and body is from La Roche-Posay. For hair, it’s Kerastase Chronologiste Bain Regenerate and Kerastase Chronologiste Masque Intense Regenerant, and the hair serum is Kérastase Nutritive Nutri-Supplement Split Ends Serum.
What's your best hair tip?
Keep the lengths of your hair hydrated. Opt for a hair mask in summer over conditioner to help keep your colour looking fresh and your hair hydrated.
