If you thought Brazilian waxing was a trend, we are happy to report that it's still hot right now. Nicky Shore of OFF & ON gives us her summer hair removal tips.
What’s new with Brazilians?
Well actually, I think it is safe to say Brazilians are the now completely mainstream and the norm. A bikini wax is almost extinct with the introduction wax being the in between at a minimum.
We have definitely not seen that the ‘bush is back’ as some articles may lead you to believe. When we opened some people felt they needed to whisper the word Brazilian down the phone but now no one blinks an eyelid. Not a phase or a fad, the Brazilian is the wax of choice for down there hair.
What has most surprised you about NZ women's waxing habits?
They have evolved quickly to appreciate the difference between just a wax and a great wax. There is some seasonality to New Zealand waxing which is to be expected but less so than you may think… generally rain, hail or shine, most women stick to a very regular four or six weekly pattern. This has multiple benefits for results as well. When it comes to waxing the majority of our business is Brazilians, whereas for the larger areas such as legs women tend to make the choice between regular shaving in the shower or dealing with the issue for good with permanent options like laser hair removal.
What's your best advice for planning a tidy prior to the holiday season?
Don’t wait until just before you go away. Having a regular waxing cycle is best for encouraging finer hair growth, and a smooth result. Exfoliate and moisturise your skin well in the week prep to your wax and time your fake tan application (not 24 hours before or after).
What must you never do pre and post waxing?
Exposing your skin or follicles to anything that can compromise them when opened from the waxing process – think saunas, swimming, hot showers, fake tan, perfumed moisturisers and the sun. And also don’t pick or touch the area or create excess heat or friction.
What's your three tips on the best wax etiquette?
1. Watch your body temperature – rushing around, being late, going to the gym before hand… all of these can alter your skin and its reaction to waxing.
2. The best skin to wax is clean and dry – have a shower prior to your wax in the morning, pat the skin dry and have it free of any fragrance, lotions or creams.
3. Do your homework and talk to your therapist! – your therapist asks the questions to make sure you get the best and most comfortable result. For example how is the wax temperature? Be honest about any changes in your medical history or even supplements you take. And following the pre and post instructions really does make a difference.
