I couldn't cope without heated hair tools. My hair is naturally wavy, unruly and prone to frizz, so getting my hands on ghd's revolutionary new 'smart' styler was a godsend – and now I won't be without it. Here's how it works.

What is it?
A new heat styling tool called platinum + equipped with smart technology that predicts your hair's needs as you style to deliver smooth, shiny locks without compromising the condition of your hair. It's quick too, heating up to185ºC in just 20 seconds so it's ready to use when you want it.
What does it promise?
The styler's built-in 'ultra-zone predictive technology' senses the thickness of your hair, the section size you're trying to smooth, and the speed at which you style your locks. It then adjusts the heat accordingly to ensure the optimum temperature of 185ºC remains consistent across each plate to smooth hair in a single stroke. The precision-milled plates allow hair to pass through effortlessly, helping to maintain strength, and shine as you style.

Insider tips

Here we ask Nadine Johns-Alcock, ghd national education manager, how to get the most out of these high-tech irons:

Who will benefit most from the new platinum+ styler?
If you are styling your hair regularly, want to increase shine, or are concerned about reducing hair damage, then the platinum+ styler is for you. It provides the ultimate in technology by intuitively sensing how much hair is between the plates and adjusting the energy needed to maintain the optimal temperature of 185ºC to deliver the best possible results.

Poker-straight hair is no longer a modern look, so how do you get smoothness without your hair looking flat and lifeless?
A simple trick is to always use the opposite hand when styling, so when working on the left-hand side of your hair you use your right hand and vice versa. This action allows you to lift the hair up at the root and curve the ends with your wrist to give a modern finish.

How long should it take to get a good result when straightening hair?
No more than 15-20 minutes – and that's even if you have long or thick hair. The predictive technology in ghd's platinum+ styler constantly adapts as you style so you'll be seriously surprised at how fast and easy it is.

Any tips on how to get that effortless-looking wave we all love?
Use a combination of the ghd curve classic tong, and ghd curl hold spray. Curl small sections of the hair, one at a time, clipping each curl on top of your head with a bobby pin as you go. Once hair has completely cooled, lightly brush through all the curls from root to tip, then use your hands to finish.

What is the best angle to hold a styler to create movement in the hair?
Begin with your styler in the upside down position pointing towards the ground, then clasp the hair and rotate the styler away from your face. Pull the hair through the styler at a 45-degree angle for a natural-looking result, and try to keep the sections of the hair pulled vertically away from the head. The wishbone hinge on the platinum+ styler takes all the guesswork out of it for you by keeping hair perfectly in place so you can concentrate on the rest.

What's your best hair tip of all time?
For taming an unruly fringe, use a comb and dry from left to right, changing direction with the comb. Point the hairdryer downward so you direct the air onto the roots. Once dry, use a straightener to smooth all the hair towards the tip of your nose.
