Have you been wearing the same hairstyle and sporting the same colour for decades? Editor Trudi Brewer says it could be time for a refresh.
When it comes to your hair, change is good. And it doesn't have to be radical; a fringe, subtle layering, or face-framing colour a new hair look is one style adventure you shouldn't be hesitant to enjoy. Here's how to take the plunge.
Are you in a hair rut?
Check out photos of yourself at school, and if your hair looks the same, it's time for a change. If you don't like it, your hair will always grow back. The first step is to find a hairstylist you trust and share your lifestyle, home styling ability, and the looks you like and don't like.
A haircut is not life-threatening
Hairstylists skilled and know what cut will flatter your features and work best with your hair type. These are the most important steps toward finding a style you like and a look that will give you confidence.
How to choose a new style?
One style misconception is that layers won't suit your style. There are many ways to layer your hair, including invisible layering, a face-framing hair trend that will give you instant cheekbones. All help give your style body, texture, show off new colour, and make it easier to style.
Face shape does come into play
A haircut can dramatically enhance your best facial features (and downplay those you don't like). Always work with your face shape to balance and enhance your best features. For rectangle face shapes, layering is your friend. Aim for movement and a fringe. For an oval face shape, a blunt bob or a long bob (lob) with subtle layers to create movement works well. Finally, if your face is square, or long and square, a side-part or curtain fringe is uber flattering and will add softness to sharp features.
A fringe can be a major change
A fringe can slim down a long face and draws attention to your eyes. They can range in length, sitting in the middle of your forehead to skimming your brows. If you have straight, fine hair, opt for a full fringe to frame the face, and sit well. Those with thick hair or hair with natural curl, opt for a curtain fringe that frames your face; there's lots of scope when considering a fringe.
Considering a new colour?
From face-framing, brightening highlights, to cool lowlights to add depth to grey hair. Instagram and Pinterest are your friends when it comes to looking or a new hue. Or follow the colour in the iris of the eye. Your eyes will have flecks of colour in the pupil to help guide you toward warm or cool colours. If you're colouring your hair at home, stick to the rule, two shades lighter or two shades darker, so you get a more natural-looking result and don't make an expensive mistake.
