We’ll never say no to a great-looking dress; it’s a summer staple we wear on repeat. After all, there’s a reason wardrobe essentials are - well, essential. So, to take the guesswork out of finding a new summer look, our style director, Louise Hilsz, shares the best dresses that are also sustainable.
What makes a summer dress essential? We believe it should transition from day to night, office to happy hour and beyond. This summer, the midi to the maxi is having a moment, and as we become more conscious consumers, choosing the fabric is just as important as the style. Here are the dresses and materials that are kind on the planet and designed to keep you cool.
Linen
Natural and biodegradable, linen is also durable and versatile. The perfect lightweight fabric to wear in the heat, fashion brands are showcasing this relaxed material in a range of stunning colours this season.
Ruby Kos linen dress, $299. Seed Linen Tie Front Maxi Dress, $200. Coop My Heart Frill Go On dress, $299. Marle Sage dress, $360.
Tencel
Made from responsibly sourced wood pulp cellulose, Tencel is not only innovative, but it’s also gaining ground in eco-fashion circles. It is made with close-loop technology, which means the water and chemicals used in manufacturing minimise waste. Soft, breathable and comfortable to wear, the biggest bonus is that Tencel doesn’t crease - making it ideal for travel.
Country Road Strapless Fluid dress, $449. Rebecca Vallance Chiquita long-sleeve midi dress, $631. Gestuz ruffled-detailing short-sleeve dress, $203. Marant Étoile Tomia denim shirt dress, $721.
Cotton
One of the most common fabrics in sustainable fashion is organic cotton. This processing of this fabric uses less weather and fewer pesticides than conventional cotton. Ideal for high summer, it’s lightweight, dries quickly when washed, and is comfortable to wear.
Kowtow Elle dress, $359. Superette Vincente Dress, $269. Aje. Pivotal Tie Midi dress, $605. Caitlin Crisp Darling dress, $485.
