Shoe trends: the good, the bad and the ugly

A lot is going on in the shoe scene at the moment. There are a few comebacks, a few classics, and a few newbies. Some we love, some we wish never made a comeback, and some we have yet to decide. Style director Louise Hilsz shares these trends and her thoughts.

Slimline sneakers

Moving away from the old-school chunky dad sneaker, the trend is now wearing something a lot thinner and a lot sleeker. Adidas Sambas have been spamming our internet feeds for months, and are a favourite amongst street-style content creators. I personally am not a fan. I live in my Balenciaga Triple S sneaker, so, it’s a bridge too far for me to go slim, but if you want to trim your kicks, here are my top picks for achieving this look.

Adidas Speizel sneakers, $190. Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 'Silver sneakers, $200. Puma Palermo sneakers, $160. Gola Elan snneakers, $212.

Cowboy boots

I’ve talked about the cowboy trend recently, and I love it. I first went to Texas when I was 19, and I have been hooked on the culture ever since (aside from their meat BBQ obsession, being vegetarian). I wore this trend heavily through the 2000s, and I am thrilled to be wearing it again. Choose from local designers, original American design or festival flair - the choices are endless. And if you’re looking for more inspo get on that Coachella feed and see endless Western themed looks.

Jeffrey Campbell Fly-Away Boot, $693. Club Exx Sheriff Shine Knee High Boots, $412. Kathryn Wilson Taylor boot, $399. Ariat Women's Casanova Western Boots, $550.

Ballet flats

Earlier this year I shared my distaste for the ballet flat trend; since then I feel like it has exploded, and I am spotting flats everywhere. Whether it’s a pop of red, a mesh version or a slight heel, sadly, this trend isn’t going anytime soon.

Scarpa Siena flat, $459. Alaia Mesh Mary Jane Ballerina Flats, $1620. Ravella Sweet flat, $100. Ganni Wide Welt buckled ballerina shoes, US$388.

CROCS

It’s no secret I LOVE this trend, and in my eyes, it’s going from strength to strength. I am snobby about my Crocs, though; I don’t like or wear a classic flat. It needs to be a platform and preferably a collab with a designer.

Balenciaga x Crocs HardCrocs, $1925. Crocs Siren Bow clog, $170. Simone Rocha x Crocs Siren Clog, $POA. Crocs Mega Crush Clog, $180.

Loafers

This preppy look continues the girlcore trends popularity. There is plenty of variety from international to local brands - this is one shoe movement that blends comfort and style but my pick is a chunky sole.

Prada Brushed leather Monolith loafers, $2120. Halmanera Myer loafers, $649. Kathryn Wilson Lucinda loafer, $319. Mi Piaci Flame loafer, $300.
