Sadly, a magnificent Haute Couture dress from Lebanese fashion designer Elie Saab is out of my reach, but his fragrance isn't. The latest is playful, feminine - and young. Editor Trudi Brewer shares a scent she is suitably surprised by.
I have a fragrance preference, which I am sure most women of a certain age do. However, in saying that fragrance is objective, like fashion, I always try and share new fragrances that will be an ideal seasonally addition to any perfume wardrobe. Regarding the offering from Elie Saab, there is something for everyone within his collections. His latest, inspired by the sheer beauty of an Elie Saab designer dress, is Girl of Now Lovely. The brand calls it quintessentially feminine. “Haute Couture, perfume is the theatre of dreams," says Saab. Created to be a colourful blast of freshness, a fragrance that celebrates the joy of nature. Read on to find out why it lives up to that very vibe.
Elie Saab Girl of Now Lovely, $165.
What's in it?
A spring-like blend of juicy mandarin and mint, with blackcurrant buds, rosemary, pear and galbanum, which has a herbal green aroma, is what you get the moment you spritz it on the skin. Then the lovely warmth of summer flowers including orange blossom with rose, and frangipani. Finally, the blend of patchouli (Saab’s favourite ingredient), Ambroxan (a synthetic woody-amber aroma), and tonka bean make it interesting and sophisticated.
Why do I like it?
Indeed, this fragrance is youthful but ageless in its classic heritage. Its snappy freshness eases to reveal elements of earthiness and depth. I was inspired to spritz it on when I needed a reminder to stand up from my desk and get outside to enjoy the sunshine. I was not expecting to love this fragrance because it doesn't quite fit in my favourite family of green and floral scents. But I have worn it for two days and can't stop smelling my wrist. Indeed that is enough of a sign to realise it's time to step out of my comfort zone and embrace this bubbly new fragrance regardless of my age.
Another designer expression of loving our true selves.
