Ice rollers offer an instant cooling effect to help alleviate this relentless humidity, but what do they do for the skin? Find out if this TikTok trend offers legitimate skin-care benefits. Editor Trudi Brewer investigates.
Ice applied to the skin has an instant cooling effect to help with swelling or heat, but beyond that, think tightening and de-puffing to calm a tired and revive dull-looking complexion. Here are the virtues of ice rolling and who can benefit from this cost-effective skin treatment. Read on to learn more.
What are the benefits of ice-rolling?
From simulating the skin's lymphatic system to help reduce puffiness and toxins, stimulate blood flow and reduce muscle tension, dermatologist Annie Gonzalez, MD, says, “Anything ‘cryo’ (meaning involving or producing anything that is chilled or extreme cold) is anti-inflammatory, meaning it will slow the effects of ageing, speed up healing and can stimulate collagen production.” The cooling action also helps boost a brighter-looking appearance. “Ice rolling also helps constrict blood vessels, decreasing inflammation and reducing the appearance of broken capillaries,” adds Gonzalez.
How do you use ice rollers?
There’s no “wrong” way to use an ice roller, which is a relief, but the best place to start is from the centre of your face and roll upward and outward, making sure to apply just enough pressure to massage the skin, as using too much pressure can irritate. To de-puff the under-eyes, gently roll the tool along the area, applying minimal pressure.
When is the best time to ice roll your face?
Just like there are no rules to application, whenever you feel yoru skin could need a pick me up, like rolling first thing in the morning to take down any morning puffiness, Gonzalez says, “Reaching for your ice roller as the last step of your skin-care routine at night is also a good idea.”
Can you ice roll when applying skin-care products?
“I recommend using your ice roller to help spread products to all areas of your face,” says Gonzalez. “For example, you can apply a moisturizer or serum to your face and then use your ice roller to spread the product to your under eyes, forehead, temples, and cheek area. Massaging the face with your ice roller can help the topical product absorb into the skin.” Ice rolling over a sheet mask is also a great tip. This allows the ingredients to penetrate the skin better and deliver a soothing, relaxing effect.
Can you ice roll after cosmetic treatments?
Dr. Gonzalez says don’t ice roll for a few weeks post-injection or after any invasive in-office treatment. “You should not use an ice roller after injections or filler because the facial roller can allow the product to spread into unwanted areas,” explains Gonzalez. Likewise, ice-rolling should be avoided after any surgery that leaves a wound because scarring can worsen if healing tissue is moved.
How to clean your ice roller?
To ensure your roller isn’t harbouring any bacteria, rinse the roller with a mild soap after each use. Place it in a separate zip lock bag or container to avoid contamination when you put it back in the freezer.
