The clavi-cut

It caught our eye as a bang-on-trend hair look that is low maintenance and works for any texture, especially fine. Check out the clavi-cut and why it’s got the attention of a celebrity stylist and her clients, says editor Trudi Brewer.

What is a clavi-cut?

The latest blunt style to catch our attention is defined by its length. Dubbed the clavi-cut, it’s a shoulder-length style with attitude that hits the clavicle (aka, your collarbone). LA-based celebrity stylist Laura Polko, who grooms Gigi and Bella Hadid, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Poppy Delevingne, favours the clavi-cut for its versatility. “Longer than a bob, depending on how you style your hair, this cut allows you to customise to your liking—edgy and wavy or clean and sleek." Finally, what separates a clavi-cut from a grown-out bob or (LOB) is how the front sections are cut slightly shorter than the back of the hair to emphasise the collarbones - and the best news is that it works well for those with fine hair.

The balm

ALTERNA CAVIAR PROFESSIONAL STYLING RAPID BLOWOUT BALM, $45.

Boy, does this blow-dry lotion live up to its name and rep? It’s super-lightweight and cuts down your heat styling time by half. It's perfect for creating a sleek style while nourishing your locks to smooth frizz. That is thanks to the hydrolysed keratin, pearl extract, pea protein, sea algae, and, of course, caviar extract in the formula. Expect shiny hair with natural movement days—#love.

What to Ask Your Stylist For?

While you may have been going to the same stylists for decades (who hasn’t), your relationship with them is like any other: communication is vital to getting a clavi-cut. In salon speak, it’s best described as a lob, which is the same length all around, not angled forward, with some long layering at the front to frame the face. Be sure to specify the length; it must hit the collarbone, and layering is key if you want some texture in this style.

The mousse

Schwarzkopf Osis+ Grip - Extreme Hold Mousse For Massive Volume, $35.

We adore this whipped goodness. It was created for fine, fragile hair, fights static and offers impressive volume and unrivalled root lift. It helps your blow dry last for days while nourishing your hair with vitamin B and castor oil.

How to Style the Clavi-cut

The best part about this cut is that it’s versatile and easy to style. If you want to create soft curls, texturising spray in damp hair helps to create effortless movement. For a body without a poker straight finish, we rate the ghd Hot Air Brush. With this cut, you can flick the ends out or under and finish with a serum to control flyaways or frizz.

The Hot tool

ghd Duet Blowdry 2-in-1 Hair dryer brush, $645.

We are super impressed with this new hot tool. It is a hairdryer with a built-in brush that effortlessly smoothes while adding volume to any style. There are two heat settings, and the snag-free bristles make it glide through your hair without catching. The result is no frizz and great shine on what I would call a DIY bouncy salon-looking blowdry. See how to use it below.
