Discover Schwarzkopf Professionals’, tbh - true, beautiful, and honest by editor Trudi Brewer.
Like skincare, there has been a deliberate shift to clean colour to protect our scalp and the stylist working with our hair. Enter Schwarzkopf Professional's, tbh salon colour. Not only is it PETA-approved (this means a lot to us), it requires 50 per cent less ammonia and is stacked with natural oils to protect the integrity of the hair. With clever HEP+ technology to reduce the risk of allergies or scalp reactions, it offers brilliant shine and lasting results. Here to share how it works is stylist Joanne Plant from Exile Hair Design in Auckland’s leafy Epsom.
What is it?
The letters of, tbh have more meaning than just a catchy name, says Auckland stylist Joanne Plant. “The t stands for true, the way this colour illuminates the hair giving a natural result with loads of shine. The b is for beautiful, something women want from a salon colour service. Finally, the h is for honest, referencing the formulation and the naturally derived vegan ingredients,” says Plant. These are also the values of Exile Hair Design, which is proud to be a sustainable hair salon, “We recycle 95 per cent of everything we use, so we look after our planet while we look after you through our cooperative with Sustainable Salons.” And while this colour is natural, there is no compromise on shade choice or results, with plenty of shimmering, permanent and semi-permanent shades on offer. “There are 11 natural colours offering beige to chocolate and 16 cool shades. Finally, 11 modern, warm hues from rose-to-beige copper, gold chocolate, chocolate beige and red beige,” says Plant. With this offering, a stylist can create natural or multidimensional techniques, including balayage, ombre, highlights, pastel tones and baby lights. Read on to learn more.
Q&A
Editor Trudi Brewer shares the Schwarzkopf Professional, tbh colour service at Exile Hair Design in Auckland.
First, the grey regrowth at the roots was coloured using a cool dark blonde (8.19C). Then, I went under a Climazone hair processor to speed up the time of the colouring process. The colour stays on the hair for only 15 minutes (ideal for busy women). After it’s washed off, a cool blonde toner (916C) is applied to the basin for five minutes to reduce the look of brassy yellow tones, common in blonde hair. Then a fab blow dry completes my colour service.
A Schwarzkopf Professional, tbh root retouch, toner, and blow dry at Exile Hair Design cost $365.

What makes Schwarzkopf Professional thb unique?
There are no nasties in this colour. It has no PPD or PDT (Paraphenylenediamine, a chemical used to prevent colour fade, which, when absorbed into the skin, can cause scalp irritations). The colour molecules in the Schwarzkopf Professional, tbh are too big to be absorbed into the skin; they stay only on the hair, which is why it is so good for those clients with sensitive skin or colour allergies.
Do clients ask for natural hair colour, and why?
Yes. It is very common; we also have clients that only want to enhance their natural colour, and Schwarzkopf Professional, tbh gives a very realistic result that is easy to maintain.
What range of colours are available?
There are 27 colours available. This range can transform from a permanent colour to a glaze to boost shine to a toner to eliminate those brassy tones from blonde hair; it’s versatile.
Does it fade or wash out quickly?
This colour range is as durable as the other Schwarzkopf Professional permanent colour ranges.
What can this range of colours do for blondes?
There is a Cendre or ash collection that helps neutralise any unwanted warm tones in the hair to create beautiful, clean results. These are ideal for anyone who wants to eliminate red from their hair colour or cool a brassy-looking blonde.
How about grey coverage?
It offers 100 per cent multi-dimensional coverage for all shades of grey.
