5 great Hair perfumes

If your hair wash cycle is every three days or weekly, dry shampoo will be your blow-dry savour, and hair perfume will be your new BFF. Here's how to minimise hair washing while hydrating, and adding scented shine to your locks, by editor Trudi Brewer

Unlike traditional fragrances, hair perfumes are formulated specifically for the hair. Most hair perfumes don’t contain alcohol but help soak up the oils from your scalp without leaving the white residue familiar with cheap dry shampoos (always opt for benzoin-free dry shampoo). Another fun fact, hair perfumes are better suited for refreshing that greasy-hair smell and don't tend to build up on your scalp like many dry shampoo powders do.

So how do you use hair perfume?

From spritzing it onto the hair, brushing it through with a hairbrush, or applying it to the ends of the hair, it’s easy to scent your hair. Hold the mist at least 15 to 20 cm from your head (tipping your head upside down to spritz underneath), lightly mist your locks, and then run your fingers through your hair. If you have straight, thin hair that is dark, hair perfumes that contain oils can end up weighing your hair down; for blonde, dry hair, curly hair, or chemically damaged hair, choose formulas with nourishing benefits, like natural oils and protein.

Here are our favourite formulas

Diptyque Eau Rose Hair Mist, $68.

This isn’t the only option for hair perfume from luxe-y French fragrance brand, but we think this is the jewel in their hair mist collection. It’s a blend of refreshing orange blossom, bitter orange, juniper, angelica root and patchouli with hydrating castor oil to nourish hair while you use it.

Gisou Honey Infused Hair Perfume, $150.

Stacked with the musky Gisou signature fragrance, a blend of Mirsalehi honey and argan oil, which smells divine and rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. So while helping to repair dry, damaged hair, it leaves your locks smelling heavenly.

BYREDO Rose Of No Man's Land Hair Perfume, $122.

Sweet yet spicy, this hair perfume is divine. A blend of Turkish rose petals, hints of raspberry with papyrus wood and white amber. It’s a lightweight mist that leaves a gloss on the hair and an additive, delicate scent. It was the first hair perfume I ever used, so it does hold a special place in my heart.

Maison Francis Kukdjian Paris, Baccarat Rouge scented Mist 540, $85.

This is the best alcohol-free hair mist from that famous fragrance brand. While it’s super gentle on the hair, it also protects every strand, leaving a bright floral scent that blends Jasmine, saffron, cedar wood, and ambergris.

MOROCCANOIL BRUMES DU MAROC HAIR AND BODY FRAGRANCE MIST, $53.

If you love the scent of Moroccaoil hair care - that spicy amber and sweet floral aroma this hair mist offers that in every spritz. But why do we like it? It was made by a hair brand that gets what women want in a lightweight formula with antioxidant-rich argan oil, hair-loving vitamin E and a clever UV absorber technology to help protect your hair from sun damage. Also, you can spritz it on your body - brilliant, right?
