Carotenoids are the cool kids when it comes to skincare ingredients. Antioxidants, by nature, benefit the skin in so many ways. First, they can prevent or delay some types of cell damage by counteracting free radicals and oxidative stress, reducing DNA damage. They are also marvellous anti-inflammatory ingredients, ideal for those with sensitive skin. Boosting hydration while stimulating collagen and elastin production helps smooth fine lines; the best news is that they are abundant in the best from Mother Nature. Carotenoids are brightly coloured pigments known as beta-carotene, astaxanthin, lutein and lycopene, found in carrots, pumpkin, grapefruit, capsicum, tomatoes, algae and seafood.
Beta-carotene
This colourful antioxidant is found in orange, yellow, and red fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, mangoes, apricots, turmeric, pumpkin, pomegranate and capsicum. It’s reported to offer photoprotection and boost cell turnover, ultimately brightening the skin.
MECCA COSMETICA Everyday Face Oil, $51.
This face oil will address skin multiple skin concerns, from dryness to dullness and acne. Why? It’s stacked with some of the best antioxidants, including prickly pear seed oil rich in omega-6 and 9 and vitamin E. Grape seed and Jojoba seed oils boast brilliant anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory benefits. Argan oil is protective and hydrating while moisturising, while the beta-carotene from turmeric root brightens.
Lutein
This carotenoid is reported to have brilliant anti-inflammatory properties and is already present in our skin cells. Studies show that it benefits the body, especially eye health. It is found in green and yellow foods, fruits, kale, capsicum, spinach, and corn.
Sunday Riley C.E.O. Afterglow Brightening Vitamin C Cream, from $41.
We have raved about this cream before, and for good reason. Its whipped custard-like formula contains potent antioxidants, including oil-soluble vitamin C and ergothioneine (extracted from oyster mushrooms), aloe, and the potent carotenoid antioxidant lutein. Once slathered on the skin, this divine cream is more than just a moisturiser.
Lycopene
Lycopene is a carotenoid with antioxidant properties, but it’s way more than that. It’s a super guardian against oxidative stress and free radicals. Found in red and pink fruits, such as pink grapefruit, watermelon, and tomatoes. Linked to many health benefits, including offering natural sun protection, but not enough to skip your daily SPF.
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment, $39.
Let’s start with the lycopene in the watermelon. It includes the rind and the enzymes, and once blended with radish (which also contains lycopene), it’s a great antioxidant kick for dull skin. Next, the gentle pH-balancing blend of alpha hydroxy acids works its magic overnight, slowly exfoliating your skin. Stacked with seven molecular weights of hyaluronic acid (in various sizes to offer instant and long-lasting moisture replenishment), hyaluronic acid also plays nicely with the AHA blend to offset potential dryness. Niacinamide or vitamin B3 offers soothing, brightening benefits and water retention, while quinoa peptide firms skin - all this while you sleep.
Astaxanthin
Pronounced asta-zan-thin, it’s a powerhouse nutrient reported to protect the skin from UV damage, fight inflammation, and rejuvenate the signs of ageing, like helping to correct dark spots and wrinkles. Did I mention it keeps your skin hydrated, dewy, and plump? Found in antioxidant-rich foods from the sea, such as red algae, salmon, and shrimp.
Sunday Riley Ice Ceramide Moisturising Cream from $41.
Packed with more than red algae, expect nourishing ceramide, antioxidant beetroot extract and pomegranate. This cream is the answer to dull, dehydrated skin, hydrating and nourishing while strengthening your skin's moisture barrier to give your complexion a new lease on life.
