There is no doubt that science plays a huge role in efficacious skincare. A case in point is the Japanese brand Shiseido. Editor Trudi Brewer shares their latest interpretation of their famous immunity-boosting serum. Here’s everything you need to know about Ultimune.

I think we have all got our heads around the benefits of a skin serum. If not, then consider this. A serum was created with a targeted approach to addressing skin concerns like fine lines, dryness, acne, and irritation. Harnessing the potent power of active ingredients in a tiny molecular size, a serum, generally liquid or gel-like, absorbs quickly and alleviates those skin issues. One brand with 150 years of skincare innovation under its belts has revamped the jewel in its crown, Utimune Power Infusing Serum. This up-specked formula offers everything the skin needs for radiance, resilience, and smoothness - and suits all skin types. Interested? Here’s a deep dive into Ultimune’s skin-fortifying abilities.
What’s in it?
Almost every part of the Japanese camellia flower grown in harsh conditions on Goto Island is used in this new Ultimune formula. Why this flower? Its regenerating power helps the skin maintain its moisture barrier, crucial to how your skin looks, feels and, most importantly, ages. Allow me to unpack this. Let’s start with the camellia seed extract. Made by upcycling the strained lees of the camellia seeds, it offers a potent extract through cutting-edge bio-fermentation, leaving a solution rich in amino acids that boost hydration and skin resilience. Next, the camellia leaf extract balances the oil production in the skin and prevents dryness. Then, the camellia flower extract helps strengthen the skin barrier by improving its resistance to outside aggressors. Finally, camellia seed oil. This has been used for centuries in Asia for cosmetic and culinary use, and in Japan, it’s hailed as one of the secrets behind the everlasting beauty of Geishas. Renowned for its exceptional skin-smoothing, hydrating, and skin-strengthening properties, it is rich in oleic acid and vitamins A, B, and E. All of that is housed in a bottle, reflecting Shiseido’s commitment to sustainability. It is refillable and is made of at least 15 per cent recycled glass, while the cap is made of 50 per cent plant-derived plastic.
Ultimune has been in my skincare routine for years, so when I got wind of a new reincarnation of this popular serum, I wondered how it could improve on its already famous reputation. But in proper Japanese attention-to-detail form, the latest is as addictive as its predecessors. The same liquid-almost gel-like- lotion glides on the skin and sinks in seconds, layering beautifully with the other skincare in my routine, leaving no sticky residue. But most of all, I love how soft it makes my skin feel; I also know it’s working overtime to strengthen the skin (supporting the skin barrier, keeping moisture in and nasties out) while warding off those signs of ageing, like loss of elasticity. Do I find myself sharing its virtues with anyone who will listen - the answer is yes, all the time.
Boosts radiance, and resilience in the skin.
