If you have experienced LED light therapy, the first thing you will notice is how relaxing it is. And a few weeks on you will see the results on your face. Leading the pack in LED light treatments is Omnilux, celebrated as the holy grail for acne-fighting, anti-ageing and skin rejuvenation. There is no downtime with this procedure, and this brand is arguably the most recognised in the beauty business. The go-to Auckland salon for this therapy is About Face. We talk to owner Marianna Glucina about what to expect from a course of this pain-free 'happy light'.

What is Omnilux?
It is not a laser, nor an IPL but Omnilux is a revolutionary breakthrough in skincare. Omnilux helps the skin counteract the effects of ageing naturally. It's a simple, harmless non-surgical light therapy, an ideal choice for those wanting to prevent the visible effects of ageing and maximise the benefits of skincare products, without the risks associated with more invasive treatments. Omnilux is used to treat many skin concerns including ageing, wrinkles, skin healing, psoriasis, and acne. It is the result of twelve years of extensive medical research in the UK and is now extensively used by medical professionals worldwide. Think of this light therapy as a deeper massage for that area of the skin we as therapists’ can’t reach. Essentially it works from the inside out to plump up skin naturally.

There are different colours what do they do for the skin?
Light therapy works on the bodi’s natural repair processes to counteract the effects of ageing. There are three different lights, reaching different wavelengths in the skin. Omnilux Revive (Red) stimulates the skin’s natural production of collagen, it detoxifies, hydrates and freshens the skin naturally. It is great for all skins and all ages from teens to those who are post-menopause. This is known as ‘the happy light’ as it stimulates your serotonin levels and boosts the way you feel, ideal during winter, the best alternative to lying under the suns punishing rays. Omnilux Plus is a skin healing light, which stimulates tissue remodelling and improves collagen production by accelerating the wound-healing response. This leads to a softening of lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet. Omnilux Plus (combined with Omnilux Red) restores skin back to optimum health and vitality, ideal for ageing skin. It’s also perfect for healing after laser skin rejuvenation. Finally, Omnilux Blue, targets the bacteria that cause the redness and inflammation of acne. It destroys the bacteria without damaging healthy tissues and works with the bodies natural healing process.  Combined with Omnilux Revive, and skin peel treatments, it's a powerful alternative to harmful drugs that can deliver excellent long-term results for acne sufferers.
It’s known as the 'happy light' why is that?
It increases serotonin production, which releases endorphins and lifts the spirit. It's perfect in winter when light is low, and for many who are at risk of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). And a great alternative to ever lying under the sun’s rays for the summer feel-good sensation.

How often should you have an Omnilux treatment?
Anytime. It can be used as a single treatment to refresh the skin, ideal for a special occasion or party. Or taken as a course of at least nine treatments for optimum skin correcting and rejuvenating results. Taken as a course, for best results, you would ideally have three treatments a week, over three weeks. Also post laser, botox, fillers and or any other invasive procedures can prolong the effects as well as speed up the recovery from these treatments.

What lasting results should you see?
If your skin is looking dull, Omnilux will revive and restore its glow.

What are your thoughts on home device lights?
At a recent North American trade show, I was surprised at the number of DIY and inferior LED devices that were available. In saying that Omnilux has itself developed a hand-held device, for home use. However, it doesn't offer the same results as the salon device, it is not the same technology and can only cover a small surface. There are always going to be “me too” brands entering the marketplace at a lower price, most are without the same technology. We use Omnilux, in our clinics (the gold standard in LED light therapy) because it's based on 15 years of medical research. Omnilux LED technology, targets a particular wavelength in the skin to make effective changes, such as acne, wound healing, collagen remodelling and skin rejuvenation. A handheld device could not reach this level in the skin. My advice would save your money, and embark on a professional course of Omnilux treatments annually to prolong the look of youthful skin and delay skin ageing.
