Visible scars are notoriously hard to fade, and depending on where they are on your body, they can affect your self-esteem. Finally, a new gentle, affordable gel may help, says editor Trudi Brewer.
what’s in it?
From surgical procedures such as post-caesarean section, mastectomy, cosmetic surgery, and acne scarring, the ingredients work together to protect, hydrate and fade scarring. First, C+ Restore, a post-biotic, active ingredient extracted from Avène's mineral-rich thermal spring water, rich in protein, helps repair the delicate microbiome (the healthy bacteria) on the skin surface barrier. Combined with copper and zinc sulfates, these ingredients limit the risk of bacterial build-up. Silicone polymers help soften and flatten the scar, while hyaluronic acid locks moisture deep in the skin, which is vital for healing. Finally, it's paraben, fragrance, and alcohol-free.
What are the experts saying?
Scarring can be tricky to treat, yet the fresher the scar is, the better chance you have of fading it with this gel. However, if you're prone to scarring, including hyperpigmentation, add ethnicity (scars are more prominent in people with darker skin types) and keloid scars (raised, thickened and sometimes pink in colour); surgery or laser may be required. Back to this lightweight gel, soothing and hydrating gel with its silk-like silicone technology, it has been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of scars in just three weeks.
How to Apply
For best results, use twice daily with the specific massage technique (see below). This gel is best applied once the wound is closed, but still fresh. For one-month-old scars, press down gently along the direction of the scar when massaging in the gel. On scars older than three months, gently pinch the skin between your fingers while massaging in the same direction as the scar - a little of this gel goes a long way. This gel is safe for kids and babies from one year.
