Holiday hair can look pulled together, from styling only your fringe to boosting the volume of your pony or finishing your hair with a bow. Here are some simple, DIY summer hair hacks to help you have fabulous-looking holiday hair, says editor Trudi Brewer.
How to create a polished hair look by styling your fringe
One of our favourite New York celebrity stylists, @BradMondo, uses a round brush and a “little bit of effort” to create fluffy, voluminous curtain bangs, while you can pull the rest of your hair back into a ponytail or bun.
How to
“Part your hair. Now take a round brush and your blow-dryer and blow-dry the hair away from your face. Do one section at a time. Then at the end, you’re going to blow-dry the hair towards your face instead of away,” says Mondo. Who believes, “This will give volume and that perfect sweeping motion on the ends.”
To Finish
A spritz of hydrating texture spray will help hold your style in place (fine or clean hair is likely to drop a style more quickly), or for those with thick frizzy hair, finish with a shine spray to give your fringe a mirror-like sheen.
The tools
Lady Jayne Thermal Radial Blow-drying Large Brush, $17. Schwarzkopf Session Label The Miracle, $40.
Double the volume of your ponytail
When it comes to celebrity hair hair, JLo, Kim Kardashian, and Dua Lipa’s secret weapon is @ChrisAppleton. The Brit-born, Los Angeles-based stylist makes summer hair styling look easy.
How to
After creating a regular mid-height ponytail at the crown of his model's head, he slid the hair band back a couple of centimetres to loosen it. He then. created a hole in the hair just above the band, then folded the ponytail under the band and pulled through the hole to create extra height since the ponytail sits on top of the band. Next, he pulled the ponytail tighter to cinch it up even higher and finished by tousling it with his fingers. The result, he says, is double the volume, which will work on any hair texture.
To Finish
Eliminate frizz with a styling cream that adds moisture to calm those flyaways and protect your looks under the punishing UV rays.
The tools
Lady Jayne Snagless Thick Elastics, $8. Eleven Australia Frizz Control Shaping Cream, $40.
The bow braid
Convenient and elegant, it's no surprise that bow tie braids have taken off on TikTok. “Bow braid tutorial” or “bow braid” has amassed 5.6 billion views, while “bow hairstyle” has collected 64.9 billion views alone. So why bows, in particular? They’re a classic reference with a modern twist.
How to
Start by brushing your hair with a smoothing brush; you need hair ties and bobby pins. Clip-in extensions are also optional if you need length or to boost volume. Start by looping an elastic around a section of your hair as if you were making a ponytail, but on the last pull-through, leave a loop of your hair. Next, cut the loop in half and pin both bow sections to your hair, wrapping a small piece of other hair around the centre to create the bow tie look - it’s that easy.
To Finish
Finish with a spritz of humidity-blocking hair spray to stop frizz and any flyaway strands while keeping your bow in place.
