Avène's new Tolérance

There's nothing you can do about seasons changing, but it doesn't mean your skin has to suffer. Put simply: Your skin likes consistency, so when the weather gets chilly, it’s like a shock to the skin’s system, says editor Trudi Brewer. Here she shares a new revolutionary skincare range that will help your skin prepare for the unexpected.

It's not just the temperature that causes the skin to react, it’s also how you treat it. Taking hot showers and sitting in heated rooms exacerbates skin dryness and sensitivities. So, to mitigate these changes French skincare brand Avène, have created a range of products called Tolèrance. Each product will slot into any routine to truly soothe reactive, unpredictable, hypersensitive, intolerant and allergic skin, at any age.

What’s in it?

The base of every Avène skincare product is its unique thermal spring water. It has an extremely low mineral content meaning, it soothes, strengthens, and restores balance to skin under siege. It also contains natural microbiota, a post-biotic active ingredient, which has remarkable abilities for controlling hyper-reactivity.
The brand calls this new technology D-Sensinose™. Born from an innovative biotechnological process, according to Ariadna Ortiz Brugues, dermatologist and medical director of Eau Thermale Avène, “Skin sensations originate in the receptors located in the endings of sensory neurons at the periphery of the skin. These receptors convert mechanical, chemical and thermal stimuli into electrical messages that travel to the brain, where they trigger a sensory perception.” She goes on to explain, hypersensitive skin is often tingly, red and irritated. This is caused by an increased reactivity of sensory neurons and a decreased excitability threshold. She believes, the mechanisms involved remain an enigma, which is why hypersensitive skin is so unpredictable and tricky to treat. “Hypersensitive skin also has a skin barrier defect, which makes the diffusion of stimuli easier and thus increases their effects,” says Ortiz Brugues. To ensure this skincare is calming and correcting it’s also fragrance and paraben-free, and up to 99 per cent of ingredients across the range are from natural origin. Read on to discover how this skincare can work for your skin.

TOLÈRANCE LOTION EXTREMELY GENTLE CLEANSER, $35

If your skin reacts to cleansers and you prefer micellar water, but find it’s not nourishing enough, this new lotion cleanser may become your BFF. It’s a waterless cleanser, so no rinsing is required, strengthening the skin’s barrier keeping moisture in and nasties out. This concentrated gel-like lotion swiftly removes makeup to leave the skin feeling clean, without that dry, tight feeling. Use morning and night by massaging gently with your fingertips, and then remove using cotton pads. Follow by spritzing your skin with Avène’s soothing thermal spring water.

TOLÈRANCE CONTROL SOOTHING SKIN RECOVERY CREAM, $40

During the transition of summer to winter, humidity levels plummet, so a nourishing, calming face cream is great for anyone with dry, normal or a combination skin type. The clever D-SensinoseTM, quickly soothes irritations, before they become an issue, and because this cream is non-greasy it sinks in fast. A ‘sterile cosmetic’ (so is the balm) means there is no risk of contamination so no need for preservatives (including hidden preservatives like alcohol which irritates the skin). The formula is protected thanks to the patented packaging, with an airless pump.

TOLÈRANCE CONTROL SOOTHING SKIN RECOVERY BALM, $40
