She needs no introduction if you are a fashion and beauty fan. TV presenter, author and beauty entrepreneur Trinny Woodall became a household name from her popular BBC television series What Not to Wear. Woodall and co-presenter Susannah Constantine changed how women dressed and helped boost their fashion confidence along the way. Today her focus is beauty; with Trinny London cosmetics, it would be remiss not to mention her number one seller, Trinny London Miracle Blur,$60. A unique, line-smoothing waxy primer (rumour has it one sells every 23 seconds) that works miracles to wipe out the look of fatigue. Now skin correcting moisturisers join the lineup, the most crucial step in your skincare routine, according to Woodall. Youth-boosting and redness-reducing while kickstarting your collagen production, even oil balancing, both contain a bevvy of active skin-correcting ingredients; Woodall says these moisturisers will bring your skin back to life. Who is the Trinny London customer?
Somebody who wants to look the freshest she can look. She wants her face to look full of energy and she doesn't want to feel that her makeup wears her. She wants to learn and wants the best things for herself - not for somebody else. She doesn't live by the latest trend, she lives very much by what's going to work for her. So, we try to educate her to help her find out what's working for her, whether it's refinement in her makeup choices, or giving her skincare routines. She wants things explained to her so she can understand them.
Why did you create skincare?
My skincare obsession is even older than my makeup obsession, and I've always felt that I've had to really navigate what is currently available to try and find what I know works really well. In the end, I thought let's make it myself - so that I can do what I feel I want as a woman, with clearly defined products, what they will do for you and how you should use them.
What are your beauty rules?
Every woman should clean her skin really well, twice at night. Apply vitamin C during the day because everyone needs a really good antioxidant. Do something if you’re at an age where you begin to look at the first signs of ageing, which is a retinoid, (vitamin A), and look at how you can resurface her skin gently using acids. Also protect your face from further damage by using SPF.
Trinny London Energise Me Niacinamdie Moisturiser, $102.
Ideal for dry stressed out-looking skin that can be prone to breakout. It boasts active ingredients such as niacinamide (vitamin B3), which helps promote ceramide synthesis and bolsters the skin’s protective barrier. As well as the gentle re-energising, succinic acid, to give problematic skin a new lease on life. This moisturiser is also Refillable at $94.
How did you choose the ingredients for the new moisturisers?
I felt we didn't want to do just one moisturiser because there are different moisturisers your skin needs at different times. There are times when I think you look tired and you want to just put moisture on your face, but the ingredients you actually need are things to take away that look of tiredness on your face. So I use ingredients in Energise Me like succinic acid that puts energy back in your face. It sinks in, and it’s kind of like a bolt of lightning for the skin. Hyaluronic acid because it retains the water inside your skin and helps to give you that buoyancy in your skin. Mushroom ferment extract because you want to feel the physical tingle on your face becoming awake and mushroom ferment extract does that beautifully. So it’s for somebody who feels they look tired and don't want a heavy moisturiser if you want something to wake your skin up, that’s what Energise Me will do. While Bounce Back is for when you look in the mirror and you're feeling your age - it addresses all the things that contribute to ageing, the ingredients in Bounce Back help stimulate the collagen and elastin with four different peptides (proteins), as well as hyaluronic acid, oat lipids, and nourishing squalane.
Trinny London Bounce Back INTENSE PEPTIDE MOISTURISER, $122.
This is what I call an ultra-rich, buttery moisturiser that will quench and calm the dryest of skins. Collagen-boosting ingredients, and phytosphingosine fatty acid lock in that moisture. Oat lipids, beta-glucan and protein peptides further help the skin retain moisture and firm your face. While that moisture magnet hyaluronic acid traps that moisture in the skin for hours. It’s magic.
Why are you a fan of double cleansing and what are the benefits?
The benefits of double cleansing are best at nighttime. Traditionally, we start off being quite lazy about cleansing and then over time, we understand the importance of it. Even for women who don't wear makeup, we have to take off things like SPF, with our first cleanse (that can include your SPF and the pollution that's come onto your face during the day and your makeup). The second cleanse prepares your skin for all the ingredients in your skincare. So, it sort of really cleans out your skin, so anything you put on afterwards will go exactly to where it's needed. If your skin isn't clean, it's not able to do that.
What is your best skincare tip?
Every woman should use SPF because sun damage contributes most to ageing. If you think you can get away with not using it, a few years down the road, you will regret it and wish they had.
