If skincare ingredients were people, glycerin would be the fun, fabulous friend who's good at everything. Editor Trudi Brewer shares why you need this ingredient in your cleanser, moisturiser, haircare and lip balm.
A potent hydrator, glycerin's ability to boost moisture in the skin is its claim to fame. According to cosmetic chemist Perry Romanowski, most glycerin today is naturally derived from plant fats during the soap-making process called saponification. In saponification, natural oils (usually from vegetables) are combined with lye, producing both soap and glycerin.
So how does it work on the skin?
Glycerin is a humectant; it pulls moisture out of the air and into your skin. Once in products, it hydrates, decreases fine lines and wrinkles and alleviates dry, itchy skin and hair and is beneficial for minor skin injuries or cosmetic procedures. New York dermatologist and created of his eponymously named cosmetics Dr Dennis Gross believes, "Because of its small molecular size, it can penetrate deep into the skin for hydration benefits in both the epidermis and dermis. Glycerin also has occlusive properties —it helps create a barrier on the skin's surface, enhancing the moisture barrier and preventing moisture loss."

This top-selling moisturiser is stacked with plant-based glycerin, as well as that hero hydrator hyaluronic acid, and Japanese marine algae, which is fortified with protein, amino acids and vitamin B.
Where is it found?
From moisturisers to lip balms, shaving creams, shampoos, conditioners, anti-ageing products and makeup, ensuring foundation and other liquid-like cosmetics stay flexible and don't crack. Dr Gross explains that glycerin is usually a supporting agent found lower on the list of ingredients of its low concentration in the formulas. "While it is a great supporting ingredient, it is usually never the star of a product for a reason. There are better ingredients that can target specific skin issues."

Who should use it?
Glycerin is non-comedogenic and won't clog the pores or cause breakouts. Good news if you're prone to acne or skin sensitivities. According to Dr Gross, as long as the product lists glycerin in low concentration, it should be fine to use daily without overloading the skin. "Glycerin is typically lower on product ingredient lists because it has a sticky texture. You shouldn't run into an issue using a clinically formulated product as directed.”
